Midnight Belly Flop

"Bump."

That is the sound of one baby landing.

On the floor.

Having rolled off my bed.

At 1:11 a.m.

The same day I said I had no real child-endangerment stories.

She's fine. Nary a scratch. Let's hope this is the worst thing I ever do.

So as some of you have heard, we've had some life threatening things happen to Nathan, both before his third birthday.
Story 1: Nathan and two other kids, all under 2 years were playing outside at daycare (Ardmore Play & Learn), when they decided to walk off with a walking popping toy, out the back enterance, through a series of three open gate doors, over cement protrutions, up steps, crossing a LARGE parking lot and finally crossing Greenfield Ave, almost being run over by an SUV, before being stopped by two elder women. When the police man returned the kids to daycare (estimated 30 minutes later), the teachers were not aware that 3 of the 10 kids were gone! Needless to say, Nathan no longer attends that daycare. Good ending to a scary story - all three kids came out unscratched!
Story 2: We are not the worry wart/baby proof your whole house parent type. Instead it makes sense to me to teach your kids some basic things that they absolutely cannot do. As such, we never bolted down our furniture. One day Nathan hid a toy in our bottom dresser. I found it there the next morning. I told Nathan to look for his hidden toys in our dresser. I stepped into the bathroom to grab something. I was gone for literally seconds, was on my way back when things started falling loudly on my son - the dresser, the jewlery box, our large tv... I started SCREAMING for my husband (who happened to be home) for help. I could not imagine getting Nathan out from underneath everything quickly enough by myself. My strong husband quickly got the major things off of Nathan and we pulled him out to safety. To my utter amazement, yet again, he came out unscratched. Despite everything than had landed on him, he had no "awi", no "bobo", no scratches, nothing. We have since attached that dresser and TV to the wall. I now use that story to explain to him why he MAY NOT climb on things (though I don't believe he did it that day either).
What scares me is we may not be so lucky next time. Three lives, is that what we are given?
