This blog began when a few mothers I know continued to trade the sarcastic phrase "I win the Mother-of-the-Year-Award" for various feelings or events that made us feel less than adequate in motherhood.
The blog has evolved slightly. It's not only a place to explain why you might win the award. Although, those are welcome, amusing pieces to read as well! It attempts to provide a space for the ambiguity of motherhood. The doubts, the questions, the celebrations, and the venting that happens when moms get together. This can be a parallel place for that, I suppose. It might be a place for gaining perspective. Or perhaps a place to reassure or remind each other that we are doing a good job. The key, I think, is to avoid being judgmental, to realize that there is more than one good way to parent, and that every child is different.
It is a very hard job, being a mom. I really never had any idea. I am thankful, so VERY thankful for a few women who have offered their ears, their eyes, (in the case of email and instant messenger), and their patience. I'm not sure that I really could have survived (this well, this far) without them. Even if I become the only author to this blog, I think I have begun to fulfill my mission to live in the moment; to breathe and to smile at what it means to be a Mother.
